Here's Why You Aren't Getting Job Interviews

In order to get an interview, you need to impress a Hiring Manager with your resume. A resume is essentially the first test in the hiring process, and if you don't exceed a certain score, you will find yourself in a heaping pile of rejected candidates. Even if you are confident in your interviewing skills and in your overall worth, you need to perfect your resume, before you will be afforded the chance to wow a hiring manager in a job interview. Here at Resume.io we have done the hard part for you. You can choose from a variety of professional and field-tested resumes that follow the exact “resume rules” that employers look for. Once you have chosen one, you simply input your information, and are left with a job-winning resume. It is important to remember, however, that what you write on your resume, can make all the difference in your job search outcome.

Here are some important Do's and Don'ts for your resume.

DO:

  • Pick a resume template that is best suited for your industry. What exactly does that mean? It means that if you are in the Medical Industry, it is probably best to forgo a resume template with too much color and excitement. People in this industry need to pick a professional looking, well organized resume template, that neatly arranges their qualifications and work experiences. Colorful font and artistic headings are probably best left to more creative industries, where attention to those kinds of details is more appreciated. No one cares if an Orthopedist has an eye for unique fonts!

  • Emphasize your achievements and capabilities. Make it possible for recruiters and hiring managers to easily identify your greatest accomplishments and skillsets. Having a well arranged resume that is clear and concise will help you to achieve this.

  • Highlight experiences and skills related to the position you are applying for. If you are applying for a job in IT, perhaps you should minimize the time you spend on describing the acting jobs you had in the town theatre. Relevance takes precedence.

  • Proofread your resume! No one wants to see spelling and grammatical errors on a professional resume. It indicates that you were rushed or careless during the writing process, and may lead a hiring manager to think that is how you will function in a job. Proofreading is so important. Luckily at Resume.io, spelling and grammatical errors are easily identified and signaled.

DON'T:

  • Exaggerate experiences or skills. Your resume is a place of honesty. Employers do practice fact checking and if you list something that is untrue, you are at risk for being thrown in the rejection pile. Simply emphasize the impressive things about you and what you bring forth.

  • Use repetitive adjectives and overused verbs in your work experience descriptions. Read our article about the effectiveness of Action Verbs at Resume.io and infuse some into your resume today!

  • Use overly complex formatting or images to make your resume seem more professional. The exact opposite is achieved. At Resume.io you can leave the formatting up to us and ensure that your resume ends up being professional and powerful.
