How to Answer the Interview Question

You're Likely to Be Asked “Why Should We Hire You?” Good question, right? Although there is a flurry of answers that may be true, you'll want to avoid saying things like, “because I need the money”, or “because I think it's a really cool gig”, and things like that. Instead, you need to show the hiring manager why you are such a great fit for the position and how your amazing and coveted skills can serve the company. Let's take a look at the things you should say when it comes to answering this age old interview question.

1. Highlight your skills and how they connect to the demands of the job.

If the position you are being interviewed for is largely technology related, you should talk about your technology skills! Perhaps you are adept in web development and business analytics. If so, talk about your knowledge and experience pertaining to these skills. Be sure the skills relate to the position at hand and show the hiring manager how valuable of an employee you can be. Taking the time to be specific with terminology and examples shows the hiring manager that you know what you're talking about, and that's always a good thing.

2. Talk about how your background has prepared you for this job.

If you have landed a spot in that interview chair, then likely your background relates to the position your interviewing for. Your experience and qualifications are what got you here, and now it's time to elaborate. Now is the time for you to discuss your experience relating to the position and industry. How will you apply this experience and knowledge in an effort to help the company reach it's goals? What valuable things have you learned along the way that will help you achieve success in this new position? Be specific, and discuss real-life experiences that relate to the job.

3. Talk about how you are unique.

You have one chance to shine, and this is it. You were lucky to be called in for an interview and this interview is your chance to explain why they should choose you. Now is the perfect time to talk about what makes you different. How will hiring you result in more success for the company? What makes you a better choice than the other candidates? Think about your unique assets. How have they served companies in the past? How are you hoping they will serve this one? Highlight what you bring to the table as a professional and as a person. Don't be shy! Be sure to convince the hiring manager just how dedicated to the field you really are.
