What does a doorman do?

A doorman works in a hotel or other type of business housed in a public building, greeting residents or visitors and assisting them with entry and other support. Doormen hold the door, assist with luggage or packages, and ensure that residents and visitors reach their destination in the building easily. Doormen monitor entryway areas near the doorway of buildings to ensure safety and proper security. They utilize excellent surveillance skills and good judgment to protect the security and privacy of people inside.

They use their knowledge of safety procedures, in additional to excellent communication skills, to provide optimal assistance and support to residents and visitors. Doormen sometimes handle incoming and outgoing mail, and record accurate logs of activity and events that take place during their shift. They also take notes and relay messages for people in the building.

How to write a doorman resume

A doorman resume should be one page only and should contain these five components:

  • Header
  • Profile/summary
  • Employment experience
  • Education
  • Skills

A doorman resume should clearly demonstrate a candidate’s ability to provide excellent support and assistance in the entry area of a building. Your resume should showcase valuable skills such as strong support, communication, surveillance and organizational skills, as well as a polite and positive attitude. A winning doorman resume should highlight the candidate’s reliability, work ethic and ability to remain calm in stressful situations. Your resume should call attention to your ability to act positive and professional at all times. Your resume should also highlight your ability to stand for long periods of time and assist with heavy items or packages. It should affirm your knowledge of building protocol and safety and security guidelines.

Best format for a doorman resume

The reverse chronological resume format is by far the most common, listing your current or last job first and your first job last. Most people's career paths tend to lead them from entry-level to higher-level jobs, so it makes sense to put the more impressive jobs first. The reverse chronological approach should be your default if you have a consistent employment history.

The functional resume format is another approach that groups past employment under job type rather than by year. This can be a good option for freelancers and contractors who do not have a long history of holding steady jobs for another company.

Resume summary example

The profile, also known as a summary, is a section under the header in which you sketch a professional "self-portrait" in your own words. Speaking of doors, this is your "elevator pitch," in which you lay out in just a few quick sentences the experience, training and passion that makes you ideal for this job.

Highlight your biggest accomplishments and best attributes here. Lead with your strengths, conveying both competence and confidence, and build a case that the hiring manager must take you seriously as a candidate for the job. See our resume sample below.

Employment history sample

In this section, list all jobs held in the past 10 years that are relevant to the job you're seeking. List the employer's name and city, plus the years you worked there. If you have years of experience as a doorman (or doorwoman), you have a huge leg up. But even if you're seeking your first job in this field, work experience in customer-facing fields will still add value to your job application. Under each employer, use bullet points to list your responsibilities and achievements at each job. Use powerful action verbs and mention job-specific accomplishments that prove you are an excellent candidate. Check out the employment history section from our resume example below.

Resume layout and design

While doormen and women aren't required to have flashy resume layouts, a great design can show off your skills and help you stand out among other candidates with unprofessional-looking resumes. A simple, yet attractive resume header can make your name and contact information stand out. You should also pay attention to the balance of white space and text in order to avoid visual fatigue for the reader.

Expert tip

If you want to create a great design with minimal effort, consider using a professionally-designed resume template. Customize it for your own needs while ensuring all costly formatting errors are eliminated.
