Sections of a dentist cover letter

You’re probably used to making notes about each patient you see, but you may not spend a lot of time on long-form writing like a cover letter. The important sections to include are:

  1. Cover letter header. List your contact details and the date to make it clear who is writing the letter.
  2. Greeting. Say hello and make a personal connection by addressing the hiring manager or recruiter by name, if possible. If you aren’t able to find their info, “Dear Hiring Manager” is fine.
  3. Introduction. Open your letter by introducing yourself and displaying your excitement for the dental profession, as well as your interest in the open role.
  4. Body. Use this space to talk through your proudest achievements, biggest talents, and extensive work history. Be sure to clarify how they align with the requirements of this role.
  5. Conclusion. Close your letter by summarising your qualifications, then reiterate your interest in the role with a call to action.
  6. Signature. Sign off with a professional closing and your name and credentials.

Luckily, your cover letter doesn’t have to be overly long. Write a concise, one-page cover letter, and use it as an opportunity to pull your skills into a narrative that shows the overarching success of your career.  This is your chance to build a connection with the hiring manager just like you strive to connect with your dental patients.

Introduction of a dentist cover letter

Start your cover letter with an impressive achievement from your background. A patient looking at your background will want to see extensive dental experience, the right education, and happy patients. Use this space to convey those things.

Think of something you’re deeply proud of and that would excite a hiring manager looking to add a top dentist to their staff. Maybe you’ve changed a client’s smile, thus changing their life, or perhaps you’ve served children who came in afraid of the dentist and left with a smile on their faces.

Do

Don't

Hi, I’m interested in the dentist position. I have three years of experience and am seeking my next opportunity.

Don’t just list your qualifications and background, however. Instead, showcase how those things align with the needs of the organisation.

Dentist cover letter body

The body of your cover letter should follow a clear template:

  • Highlight your skills and experience
  • Show how you're a perfect fit for the organisation’s mission and culture
  • Wrap up with a strong conclusion
  • Close with a call to action that makes the hiring manager eager to contact you

First body paragraph: Your suitability for the role (skills & experience)

Your first paragraph in the body section should prove your skills and qualifications through a cohesive narrative. You should display things like the following:

  1. Clinical skills. Arguably the most important requirement for a dentist is to have experience on the job, so lay out your experience diagnosing and treating dental conditions and performing dental procedures.
  2. Dental education. You’ve worked hard to become a dentist, so share your education proudly.
  3. Familiarity with tools and instruments. It takes dexterity and knowledge of equipment to succeed as a dentist, so make it clear that you understand the tools required to perform procedures.
  4. Compassion and empathy. Working with patients, especially in dental care, can be fraught with emotion and worry, so demonstrate your ability to alleviate patients’ concerns and earn their trust.
  5. Teamwork. Dentists don’t work alone; you’ll be part of a team comprising dental hygienists, assistants, and office staff. Share how you’ve been part of a successful team in the past.
  6. Problem solving and diagnostic skills. While some patients simply need dental cleaning, others will have larger issues to address. Show how you can uncover and resolve such concerns.

Second body paragraph(s): Organisational alignment

Tailor your cover letter to the organisation’s mission and vision to prove how your own values line up with theirs.

As an example, the NHS mission includes:

  • Working together to put patients first
  • Respect and dignity for every person
  • Quality of care and earning trust
  • Improving lives, health, and wellbeing

Incorporate details into your cover letter to explain how these statements appeal to you or align with your passion.
