Is Canva Good for Resumes? I Tested It...

Is Canva good for resume and how do its other features fair when tested?

Canva is good for resumes if you keep the design simple.

I tested it for Resume.io by building the same resume from scratch on a free account.

It was free, nicely designed, and easy to download but it took nearly two hours, and a two-column layout fell apart in an applicant tracking system (ATS) check.

So, is Canva good for resumes?

For a simple resume you email or hand over in person, yes, but for online job portals, only with a plain single-column template that you check before you apply.

How does Canva score for resumes?

Canva scored 7.3 out of 10 in my test, earning top marks for free templates, cost, and downloads.

It lost points for slow, fiddly editing and for how its resumes read in an ATS check.

I counted that check double, because it decides whether a recruiter ever sees your resume.

Test Score What I found
Templates 9/10 Plenty of free, good-looking options
Building the resume 6/10 Fiddly and slow, but doable with patience
Adding more content 6/10 Overflowing one page meant reworking the layout
Cost 10/10 I spent nothing (free plan only)
Downloading 10/10 Quick, clear, and free in PDF
ATS check (counts double) 5/10 Fine for single column, poor for two columns
Overall 7.3/10 Good for simple resumes, risky for complex designs

Does Canva have resume templates?

Yes. Canva has a huge range of resume templates, and many are free.

When I searched for resume templates, I scrolled through about 15 rows of free designs, nine to a row, before I saw a Pro one.

You can also filter by style, such as professional or corporate, to narrow things down.

Signing up was simple, too, and nothing in the process felt pushy or off-putting.

Once I opened the first template, though, Canva showed options to print the resume and add a letterhead.

That confused me as most people send their resume through an online portal or by email, so a print prompt made me wonder if I had picked the wrong thing.

How easy is it to make a resume in Canva?

Making a resume in Canva is doable but slow.

Canva is a design tool, not a resume builder, so you replace every line of sample text by hand.

My resume took 1 hour and 44 minutes to build, plus about 30 minutes spent looking for a builder and trying Canva’s AI.

The template opened with its sample content in place.

I searched for a guided builder for about five minutes before deciding there was not one.

So I asked Canva’s AI to add my details to the template.

It replied that “completing this task requires a premium feature,” and asked me to upgrade.

That was frustrating because I thought Pro only meant extra templates, not help with writing the resume itself.

This meant that I did it all manually.

Here is what slowed me down:

  • Text boxes moved when I did not mean to move them
  • Adding a new section meant moving and resizing everything around it
  • Auto-spacing did not always line things up, until I zoomed in to adjust it
  • Canva offers hundreds of fonts, and many are not suitable for a resume

That last point matters most for first-time job seekers, since Canva leaves font choice and section placement to you.

Dedicated resume builders tend to limit you to resume-safe fonts and place the key parts of a resume for you.

There is a bigger time cost, too, because most job applications need a customized resume.

In Canva, every tailored version means more manual edits.

What happens when your Canva resume runs onto a second page?

When a Canva resume runs over one page, you have two choices.

You can squeeze everything onto one page by resizing and cutting words, or add a second page.

Adding a page is simple, since you can duplicate the first one, but fitting it all onto one page is harder.

When I added one more bullet point and one more job, my resume spilled over.

Keeping it on one page would have meant reordering sections, shrinking text, and trimming words, with the risk of a busy, cramped page.

Duplicating the page kept my fonts, spacing, and layout, so I did not have to rebuild the design, though I still had to edit the content on the new page.

If you are already editing, it does not feel like much extra work, but if you did not expect to overflow, it is a pain.

Some reviews say Canva resumes are stuck at one page, though that was not my experience.

Is Canva’s resume builder free?

Yes. I made and downloaded my resume in Canva without paying anything.

Free templates, editing, and PDF downloads cost nothing.

The catch is help: Canva’s AI could not fill in my resume without a Pro plan, and I only found that out after I had picked a template and typed in my details.

To be fair to Canva, it was clear about the cost at that point and it offered monthly and yearly Pro plans, with the yearly plan working out cheaper per month.

In the US, Canva Pro costs $18 a month or $180 a year for one person at the time of writing.

The free plan does include some AI uses each month.

But the task I needed, filling my details into the template, was a Pro feature.

There is a 30-day free trial, and you can cancel any time.

It asks for a card upfront, but it shows exactly when you will be charged and sends a reminder before the trial ends.

A job search can easily last longer than 30 days, though, so keep an eye on that date.

Can you download a Canva resume as a Word document?

No. On the free plan, Canva lets you download your resume as a PDF, JPG, or PNG, but not as a Word document.

I did not see a Word option among the Pro formats either.

For job applications, PDF is the format to choose, and Canva suggests it for you.

Download option Free plan Pro plan
PDF (digital or print) Yes Yes
JPG and PNG Yes Yes
SVG No Yes
Compressed PDF No Yes
Pages as separate files No Yes
Word document Not offered Not offered

Downloading was quick, I could pick specific pages, and free templates came without a watermark.

One small thing caught me out: the file name comes from the template’s original title, which I did not notice at first.

A recruiter sees that file name, so rename it to something like Jordan-Ellis-Resume.pdf before you send it.

Avoid JPG and PNG for applications, since they are images and an ATS has no text to read.

Are Canva resume templates ATS friendly?

Simple Canva templates are mostly ATS friendly, with small errors.

Two-column Canva templates are not.

In my test, a single-column resume came through readable but slightly scrambled.

A two-column design came out jumbled, with the name missing from the top and job details split apart.

Why I ran this test

Many employers use an applicant tracking system.

This is software that reads the text in your resume and sorts it before a person sees it.

An ATS reads text, not design, so I copied everything out of my Canva PDF and pasted it into a plain text editor to see roughly what the software sees.

A plain-text paste is a close check rather than a real ATS, and real systems vary.

But if the text comes out scrambled in a text editor, there is a good chance software will struggle with it too.

How the single-column template did

Most of the text came through in order, and it was all selectable, which is a good sign.

But there were three small problems:

  • The space in my name disappeared, merging my first and last name into one word
  • A section heading ended up below its own content
  • Hyphens dropped out of some words, which can break keyword matches

None of these would ruin an application on their own.

Together, they show that even a plain Canva design is not perfectly clean.

How the two-column template did

For this test, I used a two-column template with its sample text, since the layout was what I wanted to check.

The result was a mess:

  • The paste started with a list of languages, which sat at the bottom of the actual resume
  • The candidate’s name did not appear at the top
  • Headings broke into spaced-out letters and merged together
  • Company names, job titles, dates, and descriptions were all separated
  • Contact labels like “Phone” and “Email” were split from the details they belonged to

It was almost back to front, meaning an ATS would struggle to tell which job title went with which company.

Why Canva resumes scramble

A PDF stores text in the order it was built, not the order you read it.

In a design tool like Canva, that is often the order the text boxes were added.

Columns make this worse, because the software has no clear reading order to follow.

Spaced-out lettering is a known problem, too.

Greenhouse, a widely used ATS, lists a resume with spaces between the letters as a formatting issue that can lead to a partial parse that has to be corrected by hand.

Its documentation also flags graphics, photos, text boxes, and columned layouts as possible parse issues.

Career expert Amanda Augustine, CPRW, gives the same advice for human readers. “Avoid dense blocks of texts, endless lists of bullet points, custom formats, and elaborate designs that can be overwhelming to readers and make it more difficult for them to find the details they care about.”

When should you use Canva for your resume?

Use Canva for your resume when a person, not software, will read it first.

It works well for email applications, in-person handovers, and creative roles.

For online job portals, use a simple single-column template and check it first, or choose a plain document instead.

Your situation Is Canva a good fit?
Handing your resume over in person or at a job fair Yes. Design can help you stand out
Emailing a small business owner directly Yes. A person will read it
Applying for a design, marketing, or creative role Yes, but keep a plain version for portals
Applying through an online job portal Only with a simple single-column template you have checked
A job that closes soon Not ideal. Building it by hand takes time
Sending lots of tailored applications Slow. Every version needs manual edits

How can you make a Canva resume work better?

You can make a Canva resume work better by keeping it plain.

Choose a single-column template, use a standard font, skip icons and skill bars, and check how the text reads before you apply.

These habits saved me time and kept my resume readable in testing.

  1. Choose a single-column template, not a two-column one
  2. Use a standard font such as Arial or Calibri
  3. Avoid headings with spaced-out letters
  4. Skip icons, photos, and skill bars
  5. Zoom in when you fix spacing, since it makes small adjustments much easier
  6. Duplicate your first page if you need a second one
  7. Download as a PDF, never as JPG or PNG
  8. Rename the file to your name before you send it
  9. Check the file size, because Greenhouse cannot parse resumes larger than 2.5MB and PDF compression is a Pro feature in Canva greenhouse
  10. Paste your PDF text into a plain text editor and make sure it reads in order

How did I test Canva for resumes?

I tested Canva in October 2026 on a brand-new free account, without starting the Pro trial.

Here is how each test worked:

Test What I did
Templates Searched for resume templates and opened the first one shown
Building the resume Replaced all sample text with the test resume and timed it
Adding more content Added one bullet point and one extra job, then a second page
Cost Noted every point where Canva asked for money
Downloading Checked every file type, watermark, and paywall
ATS check Pasted the PDF text into a plain text editor

I scored each test out of 10 and counted the ATS check double.

For the two-column ATS check, I used the template’s own sample text, since the layout was what I was testing.

Q&A: What I really thought of Canva

Here are some honest answers to the most asked questions of Canva's resume making abilities.

Would you use Canva for your own resume again?

Yes, I would, because the free version gave me more than enough to make a resume, even if mine was simple.

The two-column design was easy to edit too, and I could even add a skill bar, although I had to stretch a line element by hand to make one.

It is relatively easy, just time-consuming, and I would keep two-column designs for resumes a person reads, not ones I upload.

What surprised you most?

The number of free templates. There were so many options that I did not feel I needed Pro at all.

That only changed once I started editing and wanted help.

Is Canva Pro worth it just for a resume?

I did not test Pro for this review.

But if its AI can fill in your details and make changes quickly, I think it could be worth the money for the time it saves alone.

What would you use if a job closes soon?

Canva’s Pro features might be enough.

Honestly, though, if I needed a resume fast, I would use a tool like ChatGPT to help draft the content, then drop it into a simple template.

Do you need design skills to make a resume in Canva?

Not at all. You just need an eye for what looks clear to the reader.

Adding, removing, and changing elements is easy.

And if you want to keep things simple, Canva lets you do that just as easily.
