Let’s get started.

Resume summary example: sharing your caring

Your Community Outreach Coordinator resume summary (also known as a profile) is more than an overview of your career: It is a chance to show off your personality and to boost a bit about how you gathered community resources and used your problem-solving skills to your organization's advantage. As a Community Outreach Coordinator, your ability to communicate with community members and foster relationships is a big part of your job. Your profile is the one section of your resume where you can offer insights into who you are as well as what you have achieved.

Your profile should be a short paragraph — about 100 words (200 in exceptional circumstances) — containing strong descriptive language that tells hiring managers why you are a great fit for their social services organization. Also include a successful special event or outreach activity that you led or a method you used to attract service providers or community groups to partner in your efforts. In short — even short / micro success stories provide an important advantage.

Remember: This section should serve as a vibrant professional summary conveying the value you bring as a Community Outreach Coordinator. Be sure to include any information you do not want a recruiter to miss.

Employment history sample: achieving higher goals

Your employment history tells recruiters how your career has progressed. Don’t fall into the trap of simply recounting your job responsibilities; instead, show what you have done to make yourself a valuable Outreach Worker. If you are applying for your first job as a Community Outreach Coordinator, show how your other work experience in a related field has prepared you for this new challenge.

As a Community Outreach Coordinator, you may have expertise in different areas of human services. Some Outreach Coordinators are also social workers or case managers who work with groups or individuals in the community. Others focus on public health, coordinate community health services, or develop educational programs for non-profit organizations. No matter what area you have worked in, you have probably performed functions common to all, such as setting up and publicizing community meetings, working with community partners, or developing and tracking outreach plans.

Expert tip

Beat the Applicant Tracking System (ATS)

If you are applying online, your prospective employer is using an ATS, which scans and evaluates your resume to decide whether to pass it on to a person. While there is no simple way to overcome this obstacle, there are ways to improve your chances. Pay careful attention to the wording of the job listing and the frequency of the skills mentioned. Then, insert those keywords and phrases into your resume text.

The best resumes personalize each section for the specific job. This also shows your employer that you are paying attention to their needs. While the skills section of your CV is an easy place to do this, make sure you align your job descriptions and summary section as well.

Your resume should highlight your ability to manage several projects at the same time. Highlight your problem-solving skills by using each bullet item to describe a roadblock you encountered, the actions you took to go around it, and the results you achieved. Be sure to analyze each job description so that you are targeting the skills and requirements hiring managers want. Then use powerful action verbs that showcase your skills and abilities.

Community Outreach Coordinator resume skills example

The skills section is a brief look at the attributes you will bring to the job. Here, you will choose five to ten skills that match those recruiters seek.  As a Community Outreach Coordinator, you must be adept at more than communication, although that is a big part of your work. Planning and executing outreach events requires many organization skills as well as basic skills such as a command of the Microsoft Office suite.

Expert tip

Get specific

Take inventory of all the skills you have used on the job and each sector in which you have experience. For instance, if you have a specialty in health care, make sure you use that definer: Medicaid documentation assistance instead of documentation assistance. Also consider any skills you have used in jobs that were not in human services. Perhaps you conducted public relations efforts at your last job. That skill is transferable to the job you seek now.

Community Outreach Coordinators are responsible for cultivating partnerships and relationships through community outreach initiatives. They work to develop and foster important relationships that can add to the support and success of their organization. They may be the face of the organization and be expected to have excellent public speaking and Powerpoint presentation skills as well as managing social media platforms and outreach programs.

In this position, you may also be responsible for performing extensive research to discover and connect with potential partners. You might also handle the recruitment of volunteers and employees to an organization.

As you conduct your job search, analyze each job listing and tailor your resume to each specific job. Use your highest level skills to distinguish yourself from other candidates. If you are an Excel wiz, sure, put that in, but many employers will assume you have a knowledge of basic office software. You may add a bit of new information to your cover letter, but remember that you must first get past the Applicant Tracking System that is scanning your resume for keywords and phrases your prospective employer finds important.

CV education example: social and language learning

Many employers require Community Outreach Coordinators to have a bachelor’s degree in human services or a related field such as social work, sociology, psychology, or cultural anthropology. Because you will be working with a diverse population that may include immigrants, it is in your best interest to minor in a second language or learn a language outside college. If you have taken intensive language courses, you may list them here or create a separate language section.

List all degrees and certifications here, even if they are not directly related to the job you seek.  Any honors or distinctions should be noted here as well. If you hold a degree higher than a bachelor’s degree, you may leave out your high school. You can also list certifications here, or create a separate section highlighting them. If you already created a language section, you may consider combining them or listing your languages in your skills section to save space.
