What does a baseball coach do?

Baseball coaches instruct athletes and make game plans for winning games in the sport. They guide and mentor athletes, helping them achieve their maximum level of performance, while minimizing their risk of injury. Baseball coaches work at all levels from volunteer T-ball coaches to Major League Baseball (MLB). They work for a school, community recreational organization, or a sports facility.

The use their knowledge of fielding and batting techniques and strength, speed and endurance conditioning, allowing players to improve their game. Baseball coaches design and plan programs aimed at promoting and supporting optimal physical condition of athletes. They teach players about the rules, regulations, and specifics of the game. Baseball coaches seek to continually encourage team unity and sportsmanship. They aim to evaluate, recruit, and retain talented players.

Baseball coaches may also coach other sports during the off-season.

Statistical insight

Teams also have minor league affiliates who employ coaches. Most coaches have at least some playing experience in the minor leagues.

How to write a baseball coach resume

Your baseball coach resume consists of specific elements. Before you begin, it’s important to know what those are. Your CV should contain the following components:

You set up your batting lineup and place players in the field based on your knowledge of your team and your opponent. You should do the same when strategizing for your job hunt. Scout your target employer, the team they field and the players you will coach. Check out the environment and coaching philosophy as well.

Then, set a tone that meshes with that employer. Target your message as well by choosing examples and skills that show that you will be a great fit for the job.

Expert tip

Outplay the Applicant Tracking System

Applicant Tracking Systems, or ATS, are software programs that scan, sort and assess resumes for human resources departments. If you apply online, you will be screened by one of these systems.

The best way to ensure that you won’t get filtered out before your baseball coach resume gets into the hands of a person is to understand what your target employer wants. Analyze the job listing, carefully highlighting keywords and phrases within it that you can then use in your resume.

Don’t overdo it or your text will sound unnatural, but try to organically fit those phrases in.

Choosing the best resume format for a baseball coach

Unless you have a compelling reason to do otherwise, the standard reverse chronological order resume format is your best choice. That means that within your employment history section, you will begin with your most recent position and work your way backward.

However, if you have taken a more circuitous path to your current position or you coach several different sports throughout the year, you may consider the other resume formats we suggest as chronological alternatives or hybrids. These alternatives are also useful if you are just entering the job market or are a mature job seeker.

Unless you are a scientist or work in a highly technical field, the functional resume format should not be your first choice. It offers a means to emphasize niche or highly complex skills by expanding the skills section and reducing the employment history section in exchange.

We highly recommend that baseball coaches go with the reverse chronological order resume format because it is favored by both recruiters and the ATS.

Resume summary example: lead off strong

Coaching requires deep knowledge of baseball, but style and personality play a big role. If you don’t mesh with the team and its style of play, no matter how great of a coach you are, it won’t work. That’s what makes the summary section of your baseball coach resume so important. It is this paragraph, also known as a profile, that gives you the freedom to show who you are.

Hit it hard with a strong sentence that touts your career highlights. Use strong words to describe you and your motivational methods. Tell the athletic director why you can turn the team into champions or simply improve the player’s joy of the game. Add a sentence about your coaching philosophy as well.

Employment history sample: middle of the order

The middle of the order does the heavy lifting on your offense and the employment history section of your baseball coach resume does the heavy lifting in your career descriptions. It is here that you detail all the great things you have achieved as a baseball coach.

Choose 3-4 items for each job to turn into strong bullet points. Each should start with a strong action word followed by what you accomplished. This is not a list of your responsibilities, but a listing of your achievements.

Expert tip

  • Grand slam
  • Infield shift
  • Championing
  • Wind up

Resume layout and design: keep the grounds neat

You know that when the baseball diamond is well-groomed, the team looks better and the fans are impressed. The same is true of the design of your resume. The first look at your resume is really the first look at you: What do you want the hiring manager to think? That you are professional, organized and pay attention to details?

Here are some tips for creating a layout that does just that:

  • Maintain margins of at least ¾-inches to avoid a crammed in look.
  • Use a different font for your headings and display type than you do for your text.
  • Keep it neat and clean — stay away from too much color or any graphics.
  • If you must use two pages, try not to split a section.

A resume template can help you avoid design mistakes while creating an attractive and functional layout in a few clicks.
