This is not the place to be shy! Go ahead and boast about your years of experience without exaggerating. Think about your biggest assets and show them off. Include a sentence on your proudest professional achievement. Do you have a spotless safety record? Do you have experience with the same type of machinery used in the position for which you are applying? Have you handled hazardous materials safely? Highlight that here.

Example

Experienced Tractor Driver with several years of work experience operating tractors and maneuvering heavy machinery for construction purposes. Bringing forth an in-depth knowledge of safe practices, machinery-use guidelines, and preventative maintenance techniques. Offering a clean driving record, knowledge of traffic laws, and a strong work ethic.

Layout and formatting

The key here is to keep your resume easy-to-read. Trying too hard to stand out is obvious, and recruiters are unlikely to spend much time on a resume that looks great but is hard on their eyes. You are lucky if recruiters spend more than a few seconds scanning your resume, so make those seconds count!

Make sure you have well-labeled section headings and contact information. Do not cram too much text onto the page: Vary your line lengths to allow for white space which makes reading easier.

Employment history example sentences

In your Employment History, or Professional Experience Section, you want to show a pattern of growth from the basic skills you used in your first job to the higher-level skills or responsibilities you have now. If you are looking for your first job as a Tractor Driver, you may list jobs in other areas as long as you tie the skills from those jobs to the ones you need for your new position. Check the job description for requirements and list as many as you can. Communication skills, time management, organization, and teamwork as all transferrable skills.

As a Tractor Driver, you will drive and control equipment such as a forklift to maintain grounds, till soil, plant, harvest crops, plow snow, and perform other land and ground services. You may also assist in construction projects, carpentry projects, or other projects that involve the use of heavy power-operated equipment. The goal of a Tractor Driver is to provide efficient and safe services by correctly operating and utilizing machinery.

Learn exactly how to describe work experience on a resume. There are specific formats that hiring managers and recruiters prefer, here they are!

Think of this truck-driver description as you write your bullet items for each position. Make sure you look carefully at the job listing and incorporate all the requirements into this section so that employers know you have done this work, or similar work, before. Be sure to highlight your understanding of heavy power-operated equipment, and list your experience and expertise operating specific vehicles and machinery. Call attention to your ability to ensure proper vehicle function and safe travel at all times by giving an example of how you do so. Also list your knowledge of the systems of a vehicle or machine, and ability to perform basic preventative and service maintenance, if these are skills you possess.

Also mention training or skills you learned on the job to show that you are willing to take on new challenges.

Remember to use powerful action verbs and mention job-specific accomplishments that prove you are an excellent candidate. Instead of just listing job responsibilities, try to include something you achieved while taking care of those responsibilities. See resume example content below.

Example
  • Operated Farm Tractors efficiently and without accidents.
  • Performed routine maintenance and preventative actions on equipment.
  • Processed on-time deliveries and services.
  • Worked well with other Farm workers to achieve success and meet goals.
  • Operated with safety rules and regulations in mind at all times.
  • Utilized advanced knowledge from workshops and training sessions.

Education section example

Tractor Drivers need a high school diploma, although an associate’s degree from a community college may give you a boost. Depending on the state, you may need a  commercial driver’s license (CDL) or for heavy equipment, a Class A CDL. You will receive on-the-job training that you can include in your Employment History, however, if you do any formal training, put that in your Education Section. List any certifications or licenses you hold, as well as any workshops or courses you have taken involving Tractor Driving or Heavy Power-Operated Equipment.

See example content below.

Example
  • 2013 Northeast Driver Training School, CDL License Rockingham, VT
  • 2013 Vermont Technical College, Tractor Safety Randolph Center, VT
  • 2009-2013 Stowe High School, High School Diploma Stowe, VT

Skills section example

The Skills Section is a listing of five to ten abilities that can be easily scanned by employers. Although you may have mentioned some or all of these in your Employment History Section, it is important to break them out here. Remember that only the most impressive resumes get more than a brief look, so you want to offer as much information as possible in that time.

Look at the job listing and match as many of the required skills there. Be as specific as possible. Mention the exact equipment you have used, especially if it is also mentioned in the job listing.

Expert tip

Make a list of all your applicable skills and then cherry-pick the ones that best fit the job for which you are applying.

Try for a mix of technical and people, or hard and soft, skills and focus on higher level skills that are more likely to elevate you above other applicants.
