What does a student teacher do?

Student teachers are teachers-in-training who gain essential classroom experience by working within a real school or classroom. Student teachers may take on a variety of tasks to help the full time teacher and their responsibilities may grow over the course of their experience as a student teacher. Some of the most common duties include:

  • Shadowing the classroom teacher to gain more insight into classroom management
  • Helping the classroom teacher by preparing lesson plans, making copies, or distributing assignments
  • Working with students individually or in small groups to facilitate learning
  • Teaching short lessons to practice presenting information effectively

How to write a student teacher resume

The very first step in writing your student teacher resume is understanding what sections to include. Your CV should contain the following elements:

  • The resume header
  • The resume summary (aka profile or personal statement)
  • The employment history section
  • The resume skills section
  • The education section

When writing your student teacher resume, make sure to consider the position you are applying to and your overall goals. If you are looking to gain classroom experience in your first student teaching job, you can use your resume to focus on your academic experience. However, if you already have student teaching experience, it’s important to focus on how that has prepared you for a real classroom role.

Read the job description closely before crafting your resume. What skills or qualifications are most important to the school you are applying to? Make sure to tailor your resume to the exact needs of the position and highlight the most relevant examples from your education and student teaching experience.

Choosing the best resume format for a student teacher

Whenever possible, we recommend using the reverse chronological resume format when writing your student teacher resume. This format is considered the “standard” because it focuses on your employment history section where you can list your previous jobs and expand on your most relevant experience. You should list positions from most recent to oldest (hence the name reverse chronological.)

If you are still a student or don’t have much experience to show, you may consider using the functional or hybrid models. These resume formats focus on your skills and education instead of your employment history. While they can serve you well in a pinch, we recommend moving to the reverse chronological structure as soon as you can to avoid coming across as inexperienced.

Resume header

The resume header is where you’ll place your name and contact information so that the employer knows who the document belongs to and how they can contact you to set up the interview. The essential information includes your name, phone number, email address and LinkedIn or other professional social media account. You may also include a city but there is no need to add a full street address when applying for jobs in the U.S. or Canada.

The header also serves as a place to add a touch of attractive formatting to your resume. You can choose a professional color scheme to make your application more eye-catching and use it across your resume, cover letter, and other materials.

Resume summary example

The resume summary is the first section under your header. These 3-4 sentences describe you and your most impressive accomplishments thus far. As a student, it’s important to mention the name of your university and expected graduation date. You should also mention the name of the school and the student teaching role you are applying to. Focus on one or two achievements that will make you stand out and entice the employer to learn more by reading the rest of your resume. Employment history sample

Your employment history section serves as a recap of all of your professional experience to date. Start by creating a sub-heading with the job title, employer or school name, dates worked, and location. Underneath, add 4-5 bullet points that describe your responsibilities, accomplishments, and the skills you used or learned in each position. In the field of education, it is especially important to add numbers, statistics, and concrete information to quantify your impact and prove your success as an educator. Resume layout and design

The layout and design of your resume set the tone of your application and communicate your seriousness and professionalism. Since the field of education is a fairly formal one, you can’t go wrong with a monochromatic or neutral color palette. Make sure to keep a balance of white space to text and to use the consistent font styles and sizes throughout your header. You should export your document as a PDF when emailing or printing, although occasionally online application portals will request that you upload a Microsoft Word file. A professionally designed resume template can make it easy to quickly create an attractive layout with the right formatting.
