  • Put your best foot forward with a professional resume template design.

How to write an aesthetician resume

Before you jump into creating your aesthetician resume, you need to know what sections you will need to develop. Your application document should contain:

  • The resume header
  • The resume summary (aka profile or personal statement)
  • The employment history section
  • The resume skills section
  • The education section

What does an aesthetician do?

Aestheticians help maintain the health and beauty of the body’s largest organ: the skin. They are licensed professionals who provide services such as facials, hair removal, chemical peels and other treatments in environments such as spas, salons, and medical clinics.

Clients may seek advice on how to maintain their skin, find the right skincare regimen or on concerns they have with the health of their skin. Aestheticians determine the best treatment for each client depending on their skin type, age and medical conditions.

The job market and salary for aestheticians

Aesthetics is a personal business, so aestheticians need to develop a bond with their clients to keep their business growing. To keep the demand for skincare services growing, try these tips:

  • Use positive body language
  • Set your clients at ease with a smile
  • Listen and ask questions to guide your service
  • Keep your workplace sanitized and sparkling

You have plenty of opportunity in this field: The global skincare industry is expected to reach $189.3 billion by 2025, according to a Statistica report, which adds that younger people are becoming more concerned with caring for their skin. That trend has led the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics to predict job growth for aestheticians to be a whopping 29% in the next decade.

Aestheticians earn a median hourly rate of $18.95, with the bottom 10% of earners bringing in $14.26 and in top 10% earning $25.11, Payscale reports.

Resume summary example: skin in the game

This vital section is the only place where you can inject a little personality into your aesthetician  resume. You have about 100-200 words (depending on the length of your employment history section) to show potential employers your communication skills and personal style. This is also the spot to brag a little (in a justified sense) about your achievements.

If you have a loyal customer base, talk it up. Customer satisfaction is a huge part of your job. If you specialize in waxing or other hair removal techniques, have developed a great body treatment or have distinguished yourself in any way, this is the place to highlight it.

Your profile (also known as a summary, objective or personal statement) is an overview of the best you have to offer. It gives recruiters and clients a chance to get to know you and to distinguish you from other aesthetician candidates. Use strong descriptive language and powerful action verbs as you talk about your talents and relationships with clients. Think about how you want your cover letter to complement this section, too.

Employment history sample: a clear career path

An employment history of a standout aesthetician resume should show off your talents and take into account the environment in which you are applying for a job. It is more than just a basic rundown of past jobs. Aestheticians might work in a day spa, beauty facility, or even in a hospital, working with clients to achieve skin goals. Each of these workplaces requires a slightly different skillset, so make sure you target the specific job by focusing your job descriptions.

Expert tip

Focus on the job

As you develop this work experience section, be aware that some employers may distinguish between aestheticians, who focus more on the beauty aspects of skincare, and aestheticians, who work in more clinical settings. That distinction is not true across the board, but you can work in different settings, so make sure that you read job listings carefully. Then, organically use the exact keywords and phrases that you found in the listing as you personalize your resume. This will help you rank high enough to get past the Applicant Tracking System (ATS) algorithms and get your resume into the hands of a recruiter.

Use each job you have had to showcase a new skill you developed. In your work, you may perform procedures such as chemical peels, hair removal, microdermabrasion and other facials. There is no need to mention each one in every listing. Instead, try to get as much different information as you can into the space you have. Be as detailed as you can. Use numbers to tell how you improved the client-base at your current place of work, how you improved product sales, or describe the specific techniques you use.

If you have related experience, such as retail sales of skin care products or performing spa treatments, or have experience in a field such as cosmetology, list those here as well. The skills you learned in those positions are transferable.

Aesthetician CV education example

Aestheticians must complete a training program approved in the state in which they choose to practice. Most places also require that an aesthetician obtain the proper license to practice. If you have training as a medical, or paramedic aesthetician, list that training here as well. Any other licenses you have that are related, such as a beautician’s license, should also be listed because they show that you have related talents and would make a versatile employee.

List all your degrees and certifications here. Any honors or distinctions should be noted here as well. You can also create a separate section for certifications in your resume if you choose.

Resume skills example: friendliness and expertise

The skills section within an aesthetician resume is where you pull out your most desired abilities for each job and bullet-point them. We recommend making a “master list” of all the skills you have that are at all relatable to your work. Brainstorm any and all relevant skills that you might have and write them out in a separate document. That way, as you apply for jobs (now and in the future), you can pick and choose from your list to best match the skills your potential employer wants.

Choose higher-level hard skills, which are the abilities and knowledge necessary to do your job. They include understanding of different skin types and skin-care programs, as well as facial massage techniques, and any other skin treatments you perform. Recruiters will scan this section of your aesthetician resume quickly to make sure your talents match those of the job requirements. Create a mix of those and your soft skills such as customer service and communication, since you not only develop personal relationships with clients but also may need to explain home care follow-ups to them.

Resume layout and design: the face of your application

An aesthetician is trained in the aesthetic of skin, but you also know the importance of general aesthetics. A first look leaves a lasting impression. Your aesthetician resume has to capture the attention of hiring managers with a clean, professional look.

We offer resume templates in four categories: Professional, Modern, Simple, and Creative. Choose the style that speaks to you. If you lean more toward the beauty side of being an aesthetician, consider going Creative, however, remember that recruiters and hiring managers are scanning quickly, so keep it legible. Don’t overdo the personalization and keep color to an attractive minimum.  Make sure your personal data, job titles, and section headings are easy to find.

One last bit of advice: Proofread! No one gets everything right the first time around and you don’t want to give a recruiter an excuse to toss the resume you worked so hard on.
