Transport and logistics professionals are responsible for getting products where they need to be -- quickly and efficiently. In the broadest sense, this encompasses the entire supply chain from raw materials to delivery into customer hands.

More than simply moving products to the correct location, transport and logistics professionals are charged with transporting the correct items in the correct numb.er to the correct location with minimal breakage or loss.

Transport professionals are the movers. They drive the trucks or work the cargo ships and planes. Logistics professionals oversee transportation and storage of products and materials. They also manage inventory.

Transport and logistics job market and outlook

Consumers increasingly expect to order an item online and have it delivered almost as soon as their payment goes through. Data will make a difference. If you are well-versed in data analytics, you will be ahead of the game. Ease of using the automation technology that transport and logistics companies are increasingly turning to will also serve professionals in this field well, the PWC publication “Shifting Patterns: The Future of the Logistics Industry” reports.

Logisticians with data skills will be in very high demand in the coming decade, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics predicts. In fact, the number of jobs is expected to increase by 30%, or 56,400, jobs in that timeframe. Salary.com reports median salaries for logistics managers of $115,902, with the typical salary range between $102,550 and $128,318.

Statistical insight

Supply chain professionals earn a median income of $78,750 and 91% received an added cash incentive, according to a salary and career survey from the Association for Supply Chain Management. Most respondents (88%) also said they were happy in their job choice and 85% said they would recommend the career to others.

How to write a transport and logistics resume

Before you get into the details, you need to know the elements of your transport and logistics  resume. Here are the sections your CV should include:

  • The resume header
  • The resume summary (aka profile or personal statement)
  • The employment history section
  • The resume skills section
  • The education section

If every resume has the same sections, how do you differentiate yours? It’s the content that makes the difference. The best way to get the attention of hiring managers is to apply directly to them. What do we mean by that? Do you research!

When you direct your message to each job, you are telling the company that you understand who they are, how they operate and that you really want to work for them. That means finding out all you can about the operation: its scope, products, employees and goals. Then, use examples and skills that highlight what you will bring to the job.

In addition to these guidelines, keep in mind that a stellar resume:

  • Uses a consistent tone and style in keeping with the culture of the company
  • Makes a professional first impression with a neat, organized layout and design
  • Employs targeted keywords and phrases that help you fend off elimination by the ATS.
Expert tip

Develop and ATS-friendly resume

Since 99% of large companies use Applicant Tracking Systems, it is likely that you will be applying through one. These software applications scan resumes into HR systems and sort them using algorithms. Only the top resumes make it into the hands of the hiring manager.

To avoid getting lost in the shuffle, use keywords and phrases that appear in the job listing within your transport and logistics resume. Insert them naturally — you don’t want to end up sounding like a robot — and personalize them for each application.

There are no guarantees, but this method will boost your chances of being seen by a human being.

Choosing the best resume format for transport and logistics

The best format for almost any resume is reverse chronological order. In this format, your employment history section is organized from your  most recent position on back. This time-honored format is still tops because recruiters and the ATS favor it.

Your goal is to make information readily available for both those audiences, so unless you are new to the job market, are a mature worker or a career changer, stick with reverse chronological order. Otherwise, you may want to consider one of the resume formats we suggest as chronological alternatives or hybrids.

If you have deep technical or niche knowledge of blockchain or other data analytics, you may consider the function resume format, which emphasizes your skills over your employment history.

Resume summary example: supply some answers

Why did you get into transport and logistics? What are you most proud of? Why do you want to work here?

These are the questions you should address in the summary section of your transport and logistics resume. Use your professional voice to add a bit of personality to your resume and hook hiring managers so that they schedule an interview with you to hear more.

Maintain a professional tone, but introduce yourself and your career with complimentary descriptors. Highlight a career success that illustrates a skill you will need in your new position. If you have space within the 3-4 allotted lines, show that you know something about the business with a statement personalized to the specific company.

Employment history resume sample: deliver the goods

The employment history section of your resume takes the bulk of the space in your 1-2 page document. This is where you detail your career successes and show recruiters that you have brought value to all your employers.

Try to keep each job description to 5 or fewer bulleted items and keep each one as brief as possible. Use strong action words that align with your job. Try words such as drove, handled, moved, supplied, analyzed, delivered. Use data and details to back up your assertions.

Below are examples of a great bullet item and one that could be improved.

Do
  • Delivered 1,000s of packages a day, decreasing loss to less than 1% from 2%.
Don't
  • Responsible for daily package deliveries.

These tips will help make that task easier:

  • Make sure you keep it streamlined with bold, standard section headings.
  • Choose one font for your display type and contact information and another for your body text, but make sure they are legible.
  • Avoid more than a spot of color and leave off the graphics and images.
  • Create plenty of white space by varying your line lengths and leaving margins at least ¾-inch wide
  • Proofread and make your life simpler by using an online resume builder with a built in spell-check function such as ours.

Remember that your resume offers hiring managers the first visual impression they will get of you. Make it a great one!
