Tips for including your contact information

As a medical biller, including relevant information on invoices helps ensure an insurance company processes claims quickly. Including your contact information in the header is the best way to get a hiring manager to take note of those valuable details.

But having your contact information readily available is only part of the equation. You also need to have it formatted correctly.

  • Full name & title. While your middle name isn’t necessary, include both your first and last name as well as the title of the role you are applying for.
  • Professional email address. Always use an email that is professional and easy to read, such as firstname.lastname@gmail.com. Avoid uncommon and unprofessional email addresses.
  • Phone number. Make sure you have a professional voicemail greeting and can easily access the phone number you include in your header.
  • Location. Include your city and state and forgo your street address and zip code. This is common practice for modern resumes, but it is also safer. You can also include ‘Willing to Relocate’ if it applies.
  • LinkedIn. It’s always advisable to include your LinkedIn profile and to make sure the information found there is up-to-date and relevant to the role you are seeking.

Don’t include:

  • Date of birth: This could lead to age discrimination and it isn’t necessary.
  • Personal details: Hobbies, marital status, social security number, etc.

Outline your medical billing experience: a prescription well-filled

Reverse chronological order is the way to go when listing your work experience. Start with your most recent job and work backwards. It isn’t necessary to include every job you’ve ever had on your resume. Instead, stick with the roles you’ve had in the last 10-15 years. If you do have additional roles that are relevant to the job you are applying for past this timeframe, list those under the “other experience” section.

You want each role to have a concise and easy-to-read format. You can accomplish this by utilizing bullet points to show off your greatest contributions in that role. Remember to be specific about your accomplishments and use dynamic action verbs: analyzed, reconciled, coded, maximized, verified, mentored, supervised, facilitated, and negotiated.

Avoid just listing the duties you had in your roles. Include quantifiable outcomes instead. Here are some examples of task-related statements to avoid in your medical biller resume:

  • “Handled billing tasks and entered patient information into the billing system.”
  • “Performed coding for medical procedures.”
  • “Communicated with insurance companies and prepared invoices for patients.”

Each of these statements might be an accurate depiction of what you did, but they don’t give any details about the results you had in your roles. You want to show a hiring manager what value you bring to the table rather than focus on what tasks you can complete.

The vague statements that you see above can all be replaced with more impactful ones. When deciding what to include in your work experience section, think about the results you brought to the company or team: invoice completion accuracy rates, HIPAA compliance and regulation results, new filing systems you launched, etc.
