You have undoubtedly done work you should be proud of, so why keep it under wraps? By adding links to your work you can truly show a hiring manager what you’re capable of, instead of just telling them. Include links to your best work and also work that is relevant to the job you are applying for. Be sure that the links are hyperlinks, rather than lengthy URL strands. If you have a large amount of work you would like to show, it is wise to condense it into a portfolio for a more organized approach.
2. Get the Education section right
It is best to have a brief and concise Education section that highlights your degrees and any honors. If you are lacking in work experience, it is best to beef up your Education section by including academic clubs, achievements, and if applicable, a high GPA. You can place the Education section at the top of your resume so it grabs the attention of readers. If you have been in the workforce for over five years, it is best to keep your Education section shorter and placed after your work experience on your resume. Remember that not all education needs to result in a degree. Be sure to list relevant training or seminars to show you are committed to your industry.
3. List your key achievements
Listing your key achievements shows hiring managers the type of value you bring to the table. Detailing accomplishments makes them seem more real, and can leave a bigger and more positive impact on the hiring manager. If you have so many achievements that you are having trouble picking ones to include, then narrow it down to five choices. Choose your proudest and most relevant achievements that will make you stand out as a candidate.
4. Keep it down to a single page
Length does not equal greatness. Keeping your resume down to a single page is best when possible. Hiring managers are often pressed for time and nothing turns someone off more than a resume that could be mistaken for a novel. This may seem impossible to some, but by including only relevant and powerful information, it is usually doable. When using bullet points, try to keep each bullet at one line. If it goes over by just a bit, then try to modify your language to bring it back down to one. You can also trim down your margins to a half of an inch to leave more room for writing and less room for blank space.
